Hemlock
Western hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla) is the most plentiful species in Northwest British Columbia.
Hemlock
Hemlock is typically sold and shipped with subalpine fir and amabalis fir, both known as balsam. Together, the three species are known as Hem-Bal.
Traditionally, First Nations in Northwest BC carved hemlock wood into various implements such as spoons and combs. First Nations also consumed the inner bark of the hemlock, which was scraped off in the Spring and baked into cakes. In winter, a favorite way to prepare the dried cambium was to whip it with snow and eulachon grease.

Hemlock is typically used for general construction and in the production of both glue-laminated and solid beams. There are local markets for hemlock, as well markets in China, Korea and Japan depending on the grade. Overseas hemlock is used to produce building materials like decking. High-grade, large diameter hemlock is used to produce interior grade products such as window frames and doors.
NorthPac Forestry Group Ltd. produces hemlock logs in multiple lengths and sorts, including High Grade, Over Size, Shop, Regular, Gang and Construction.
