Balsam

Balsam refers to two tree species in Northwest BC: subalpine fir (Abies lasiocarpa) and amabalis fir (Abies amabalis). As this can be confusing, colloquially they are referred to as interior balsam (Abies lasiocarpa) and coastal balsam (Abies amabalis).

Balsam

Interior balsam is a medium-sized tree that typically grows to between 20 and 35 metres tall, and occasionally grows to 50 metres.

Interior

Interior balsam is a medium-sized tree that typically grows to between 20 and 35 meters tall, and occasionally grows to 50 meters. The boughs from interior balsam were traditionally used by First Nations for bedding and for flooring in sweat lodges. Interior balsam can be sold domestically to produce SPF (spruce-pine-fir) lumber and can also be sold to markets in China for the production of building materials. Interior balsam is sold overseas as Construction grade and Over Size.

Coastal

Coastal balsam on the other hand typically reaches 50 metres at maturity where it flourishes in the wet forests of coastal BC. Boughs from coastal balsam were also used traditionally by First Nations for floor coverings and bedding. Coastal balsam bark and needles also had uses as traditional medicines. The bark was boiled with stinging nettle for a tonic and a tea was made from its needles to treat colds.

Coastal balsam is prized for its strength, so it is commonly used to produce structural construction products such as planks, beams and pre-fab buildings. In Japan, coastal balsam is used in food packaging due to its neutral colour, taste and smell. NorthPac Forestry Group Ltd. produces coastal balsam logs in multiple lengths and sorts, including High Grade, Over Size, Shop, Regular, Gang and Construction.
