HAISLA
Haisla traditional territory is located along the Douglas Channel in Northwest BC, from north of Kitimat down through the Kitlope Heritage Conservancy or Huchsduwachsdu Nuyem Jees in the Haisla language. The Haisla have occupied their lands for over 9000 years and today the Haisla Nation is centred at Kitamaat Village at the head of the Douglas Channel. There are approximately 1700 Haisla members, half of which live in Kitamaat Village.
Brinkman Forest Ltd., a founding shareholder of NorthPac Forestry Group Ltd., has had the privilege of providing forest management services to the Haisla for roughly a decade. This relationship progressed to a partnership with the signing of the Haisla Brinkman Forestry Joint Venture in 2013. Through this joint venture the parties jointly manage all forestry-related activities on the Haisla Nation’s traditional territory, which surrounds Kitimat, BC. The scope of the joint venture includes road building, harvesting and clearing and access work for right-of-ways and major projects.
The Haisla have been instrumental in helping us build our opportunities. Together we have developed a very successful forestry joint venture. A business focused not only on profits but also on the friendships we have formed and the sharing of their unparalleled knowledge regarding cultural and land sustainability. The Haisla have empowered us as a company and have been influential in helping us create employment and ancillary business opportunities for Haisla members.
A key focus of the relationship is the equity participation that both parties share in the joint venture. This is a model that creates a true partnership, one that endures the test of time and allows the parties to overcome together the obstacles that inevitably arise in any business venture. We are truly honored to be working with the Haisla and very proud of the joint venture business we have created and operated together over the last several years.
