LAX KW’ALAAMS

Lax Kw’alaams are the descendants of the Nine Tribes of the Tsimshian.Since time immemorial the Tsimshian have had vast experience facilitating trade given their pivotal location on the coast.Throughout the nineteenth century, the Tsimshian were significantly involved in industrial production, and manufacturing. The traditional economy of the Tsimshian was largely based on fishing, hunting, and trapping. Today, they are involved in the fishing industry, aquaculture, and forestry.
The community of Lax Kw’alaams is located on the northwest coast of BC, roughly 30 km north of Prince Rupert. Their traditional lands and waters are located north and south of Prince Rupert, and inland along the Skeena River, running to the east past Terrace.
Lax Kw’alaams forestry is operated through Coast Tsimshian Resources (CTR) LP. CTR LP owns three forest tenures: TFL 1, FL A16835 in the Kalum TSA and FL A97045 in the Great Bear Rainforest North TSA. In total, these three tenures have an Allowable Annual Cut in excess of 500,000 m3. The owners of NorthPac have worked with the Lax Kw’alaams on forestry and other projects for over 15 years, and currently have a forestry joint venture with CTR LP.
The CTR tenures are centered around Terrace, BC and are dominated by stands of mature hemlock and coastal balsam, with pockets of cedar and spruce, with some pine present as well. While much of what is harvested are old forests, given that there is now over 70 years of industrial logging history in Terrace there are many second growth stands that are becoming available for harvest as well. Together with the support and expertise exhibited by CTR leadership, NorthPac has been able to successfully harvest and deliver the entirety of this diverse profile to various markets both domestically and internationally. NorthPac is extremely grateful for the opportunity to work in partnership with Lax Kw’alaams and Coast Tsimshian Resources.
